  • high cholesterol
  • pre-diabetes

  • obstructive sleep apnoea

Once you start using Mounjaro, you can use it until you reach a healthy BMI. It’s intended for long-term weight management, so it can be used continuously as long as you do not take any breaks.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro contains the active ingredient tirzepatide, which has a dual mechanism of action as it mimics both the GLP-1 and GIP hormones in the body to aid weight loss.

  • Mounjaro activates GLP-1 receptors to slow down gastric emptying and promote insulin secretion when blood sugar levels are elevated. This helps with feeling fuller for longer and regulates food cravings to support weight loss.
  • Mounjaro also activates GIP receptors to further boost insulin secretion and improve fat metabolism, supporting weight loss.
How effective is Mounjaro for weight loss?

Mounjaro is highly effective at aiding weight loss when used alongside a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

According to research, individuals can lose up to 22.5% of their body weight over 72 weeks when taking a 15mg dose of Mounjaro.

The 15mg dose is the maximum dose of Mounjaro and can be built up to by taking the starting dose of 2.5mg and gradually increasing the dosage in line with the dosage schedule and the prescriber’s instructions.

How long does Mounjaro take to work?

It can take 1–2 weeks up to a few months to experience noticeable weight loss with Mounjaro, depending on factors such as the individual’s diet, lifestyle, starting weight, dosage escalation, tolerability to treatment and how consistent they are with following the prescribed dosage schedule. mounjaro 15 mg kaufen

Individuals who follow the dosage schedule and maintain a balanced, calorie-restricted diet as part of a healthy lifestyle are likely to experience the desired results from using Mounjaro sooner. mounjaro münchen

What happens if I stop taking Mounjaro?

If you stop taking Mounjaro, its effects on appetite regulation and blood-sugar control begin to reduce over time. This can make it easier to overeat and may lead to regaining some of the weight lost during treatment. The extent of weight regain varies from person to person, but research shows that stopping treatment can make long-term weight maintenance more challenging.

The latest research from the SURMOUNT-4 clinical trial found that people who stopped taking Mounjaro after 36 weeks were more likely to regain some of the weight they had previously lost, and several key health markers, such as blood pressure and cholesterol, began rising again towards their pre-treatment levels.

These findings highlight that continuing Mounjaro as advised, together with healthy lifestyle changes, can help support long-term progress and maintain the health benefits you achieve while using the medication. mounjaro 2 5 mg preis kwikpen

You should always follow advice from your prescriber before stopping or adjusting your medication.

When should I take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro should be taken once a week at the same time each day, following the prescribed dosage escalation schedule.

Where do I inject Mounjaro?

You should inject Mounjaro into your upper legs, stomach (abdomen), or upper arms.

We recommend injecting the first dose into the stomach (keeping a 5 cm distance from the belly button) as it has more fat and fewer nerves, making it easier and less painful to administer the dose.

Moreover, you should rotate between injecting the stomach (abdomen), upper arms and upper legs each week to reduce the risk of skin irritation.

What dose of Mounjaro should I take?

The starting dose of Mounjaro is 2.5mg injected once per week for four weeks.

If you do not experience side effects from taking the starting dose of the treatment, then you can increase your dose to 5mg per week for weeks 5 to 8.

Thereafter, you can continue to increase the dose in line with the table below, provided you are cleared to do so by a doctor or pharmacist.

Mounjaro FAQs

Is Mounjaro the same as Wegovy?

Mounjaro and Wegovy are two different injectable weight loss medications with differing mechanisms of action.

Wegovy contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which mimics a hormone called GLP-1 to help regulate appetite and slow down stomach emptying.

Wegovy also improves insulin sensitivity, stabilising blood glucose levels and preventing sudden spikes and crashes to prevent excessive hunger signalling by the brain.

Mounjaro contains a different active ingredient, tirzepatide, which also mimics GLP-1, in addition to mimicking another hormone known as GIP to further enhance insulin release by the body.

The two treatments also differ in the formats available. Mounjaro is currently available only as a once-weekly injection. Wegovy is available as a once-weekly injection and, following MHRA approval on 11 June 2026, as a once-daily oral tablet containing semaglutide.

Wegovy tablets are the once-daily oral form of semaglutide and can now be ordered from Pharmica after completing an online consultation. They may be an option for patients who would prefer not to use an injectable treatment. Mounjaro is not currently available in a tablet form.

Is Mounjaro the same as Foundayo?

Mounjaro is not the same as Foundayo, although both are manufactured by Eli Lilly. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist given as a once-weekly injection. Foundayo contains orforglipron, a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist taken as a once-daily oral tablet.

In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial, patients taking the highest dose of Mounjaro lost an average of 22.5% of their body weight over 72 weeks. In the ATTAIN-1 trial, patients taking the highest dose of Foundayo lost an average of approximately 11% of their body weight over the same time period, though the two treatments have not been directly compared head to head.

Is Mounjaro the same as Ozempic?

Mounjaro is not the same as Ozempic. While both medications are prescribed for weight loss, they have different active ingredients and mechanisms of action.

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, an active ingredient that mimics the gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) hormones. In contrast, Ozempic contains semaglutide, an active ingredient that mimics the GLP-1 hormone, but not the GIP hormone.

Can I switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy?

Yes, you can switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy. It is recommended to leave at least 2 weeks after your final Mounjaro injection before starting Wegovy treatment. This ‘wash-out’ period lets Mounjaro’s active ingredient fully clear from your body and reduces the likelihood of unwanted interactions between Mounjaro and Wegovy.

When you begin Wegovy treatment, you will be prescribed the starting dose of 0.25mg, even if you were previously taking higher strengths of Mounjaro. This step is needed to reduce the risk of side effects and also allows your body to adjust to Wegovy’s active ingredient (semaglutide).

Semaglutide is also available as a once-daily tablet as Wegovy pill that may be clinically suitable for patients who would prefer not to continue with an injectable treatment after switching.

Thinking about switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy? Our customer service team is here to help. Our clinical team will also review your treatment to ensure Wegovy is safe and appropriate for you.

What’s the difference between Mounjaro and Orlistat?

Orlistat is a clinically proven oral weight loss treatment that reduces total calorie intake by limiting the absorption of dietary fat.

In contrast, Mounjaro is a weight loss injection that works differently by stabilising blood sugar levels to reduce appetite and slowing stomach emptying, helping you feel fuller for longer.

What’s the difference between Mounjaro and Zepbound?

Mounjaro and Zepbound are both medications containing the active ingredient tirzepatide, which mimics hormones to make the body feel fuller and reduce appetite.

Zepbound is the US name for the same weight loss medication, whereas in the UK, tirzepatide is licensed under the name Mounjaro.

The medications function in the same way and are both prescribed for weight loss and metabolic regulation.

Can I use Mounjaro while taking oral contraceptives?

Mounjaro can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptive pills, particularly during the first four weeks of treatment and after each dose increase. This is due to the fact that the active ingredient in Mounjaro, tirzepatide, slows gastric emptying, which can affect the absorption of the pill and reduce its effectiveness in preventing unplanned pregnancy.

Therefore, if you are using oral contraception (i.e. the combined pill or the progestogen-only pill) and taking Mounjaro, it is important to use an additional barrier method of contraception (e.g. condoms) alongside oral contraceptive pills for 4 weeks after starting the medication and for 4 weeks after any increase in the Mounjaro dose. You should also consider switching to long-acting contraceptives (e.g. an IUD) while taking Mounjaro.

Furthermore, diarrhoea and vomiting are common side effects of Mounjaro that can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. If vomiting occurs within three hours of taking the contraceptive pill, or if you experience severe diarrhoea for more than 24 hours, you should follow the missed pill rules as instructed in the patient information leaflet of your oral contraception. You should also consider an alternative non-oral method of contraception (e.g. an IUD or condoms) if your diarrhoea or vomiting persists.

Can Mounjaro affect the menstrual cycle?

Mounjaro can result in a loss of body fat, which may affect menstrual cycles in some women. This is due to the fact that menstrual cycles are affected by levels of the hormone oestrogen, which is produced by fatty tissues in the body.

Women who experience changes in menstrual cycles from taking Mounjaro are recommended to consult a doctor for further advice.

Can Mounjaro be used during pregnancy?

It is not advisable to take Mounjaro (tirzepatide) during pregnancy, as there is limited data on its safety and impact on developing children.

If you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant and have taken Mounjaro, discuss your usage of this medication with your doctor immediately.
