Who is eligible for Wegovy injection ?

Adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above are eligible for Wegovy.

If you have a BMI of 27 or above, you could be prescribed Wegovy if you also have a weight-related condition, such as:

  • high blood pressure
  • obstructive sleep apnoea
  • high cholesterol
  • pre-diabetes

Once you start using Wegovy, you can use it long-term for weight management. This is until you reach a healthy BMI, as long as your treatment does not have any breaks.

How does Wegovy injection work?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, an active ingredient that regulates appetite and helps with feeling fuller for longer by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).

Semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors in an area of the brain known as the hypothalamus, signalling feelings of fullness and reducing hunger levels.

Semaglutide also relaxes the muscles in the gut, delaying the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine to help with feeling fuller for longer.

In addition to this, semaglutide increases insulin release and reduces glucagon secretion when blood sugar levels are high. This helps regulate blood sugar levels, preventing sudden fluctuations that can cause food cravings.

The combination of these effects helps the individual using Wegovy reduce their calorie intake, which results in weight loss.

How effective is Wegovy injection for weight loss?

Wegovy is an effective prescription weight loss treatment containing semaglutide, designed to support long-term weight management when used alongside a calorie-restricted diet and healthy lifestyle changes, including regular exercise.

Clinical studies showed that 83.5% of patients using the Wegovy 2.4mg maintenance dose achieved at least 5% weight loss alongside diet and exercise. Patients using the standard Wegovy 2.4mg maintenance dose also achieved average weight loss of around 15% of their starting body weight after 68 weeks of treatment.

Patients using the Wegovy 7.2mg dose achieved an average weight loss of 20.7% after 72 weeks of treatment. Around 1 in 3 patients using the 7.2mg dose achieved 25% or more weight loss.

Clinical trials also showed improvements in waist circumference and cardiovascular risk factors in patients using Wegovy alongside diet and exercise.

Individual results vary depending on starting weight, dosage, treatment duration, and adherence to healthy lifestyle changes.

How much weight could you lose with Wegovy?

20.7% average body weight loss
Clinical studies showed that patients using Wegovy 7.2mg achieved 20.7% average weight loss after 72 weeks when combined with diet and exercise.

How should I take Wegovy?

Wegovy comes with a self-injectable pen that should be used to inject the upper legs, stomach area (abdomen) or upper arms.

You should inject into different areas on a weekly rotation, as repeat injections in the same place can cause localised skin irritation or lipodystrophy, which refers to the hardening of fatty tissue under the skin.

It is recommended to inject the starting dose of Wegovy (0.25mg) into the stomach, as it tends to have more fat and fewer nerves, making it less uncomfortable and easier for self-administration.

The dosage adjustment follows a fixed escalation schedule but may be adjusted at the discretion of the prescriber, after considering factors such as the patient’s response to the treatment.

wegovy dosage scheduleAlways take Wegovy according to the instructions provided to you by the prescriber.

Does Wegovy pen work immediately?

Yes, Wegovy starts to work immediately after administering the starting dose.

The active ingredient, semaglutide, binds to and activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain and digestive system within hours.

This triggers a reduction in hunger signals and slows gastric emptying almost immediately, leading to a feeling of fullness and a subsequent reduction in appetite shortly after taking the first dose.

How long does it take for Wegovy pen to work?

Noticeable weight loss can be observed within 8 to 12 weeks of treatment with Wegovy, provided doses are taken correctly and on time according to the prescribed schedule.

It is worth noting that this time frame can vary depending on the individual’s diet, lifestyle, starting weight, the speed of dose escalation and individual responses to treatment.

Is there a Wegovy tablet?

Yes. Following MHRA approval on 11 June 2026, Wegovy is now also available as Wegovy tablets, which contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. The tablet offers a needle-free option for people who would prefer not to inject, taken once a day rather than once a week.

The two formulations are not directly interchangeable. They use different doses and are absorbed differently, so a switch should only be made following assessment by a prescriber. The injection currently offers a wider range of maintenance doses, including the higher 7.2mg dose associated with greater average weight loss, while the tablet is taken daily on an empty stomach with a strict 30-minute wait before eating, drinking or taking other medicines.

Who can take Wegovy Pen?

Wegovy can be taken by adults with a BMI equal to or greater than 30 kg/m², or by adults with associated risk factors (high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, diabetes type 2, osteoarthritis, high cholesterol, sleep apnea) and a BMI equal to or greater than 27 kg/m².

With that said, the decision to allow an individual to take Wegovy ultimately rests with the prescriber.

Wegovy 7.2mg is intended for eligible adult patients with obesity (BMI of 30 or above) following clinical assessment and is prescribed after a patient has already been established on Wegovy 2.4mg.

Is Wegovy safe?

Wegovy has been approved as a safe and effective weight loss treatment by the Germany Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

Always use Wegovy as instructed, adhere to the prescribed dosage schedule, and refer to the patient information leaflet before use to maximise safety.

When should I take Wegovy?

You should take Wegovy once a week on the same day each week. You can give yourself the injection at any time of day, regardless of meals.

Does Wegovy guarantee weight loss?

Wegovy does not guarantee weight loss for everyone, though results can be maximised by taking the medication while following a calorie-restricted diet and as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Wegovy FAQs

Does Wegovy reduce the risk of heart disease?

Yes, Wegovy has been clinically proven to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke, by 20%. Following this, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved Wegovy as a treatment in the UK to reduce the risk of overweight or obese adults experiencing serious heart problems or strokes.

Can I switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy?

Yes, you can switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy. It is recommended to wait at least 2 weeks from your last Mounjaro injection before starting Wegovy. This ‘wash-out’ period allows Mounjaro’s active ingredient to completely leave your body, reducing the risk of unwanted interactions between the two medications.

You will need to begin Wegovy treatment on the starting dose of 0.25mg, even if you have been taking higher doses of Mounjaro. This is necessary to reduce the likelihood of side effects and allows your body to adjust to semaglutide (Wegovy’s active ingredient).

If you are thinking of switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy, our customer service team is on hand to help. Our clinical team will also review your treatment and ensure that Wegovy is safe and appropriate for you.

Should I choose the Wegovy injection or the Wegovy tablet?

Both contain semaglutide and act on the same GLP-1 receptor pathway, but they use different dosing schedules, dose ranges and administration instructions. The most suitable option depends on clinical suitability, treatment history, tolerability and personal preference.

The Wegovy pill is taken once a day on an empty stomach, with a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking or taking other medicines, which suits people who would prefer not to inject.

The Wegovy injection is taken once a week, can be taken with or without food at any time of day, and offers a wider range of doses, including higher-dose maintenance options for some clinically suitable patients, which have been associated with greater average weight loss in clinical studies.

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide. However, they are used for different purposes.

Ozempic is specifically approved to manage blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is an approved weight loss medication.

Is Wegovy the same as Saxenda?

Wegovy and Saxenda are two different weight loss medications. Wegovy contains an active ingredient called semaglutide, while Saxenda contains an active ingredient called liraglutide.

Both Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide) mimic the GLP-1 hormone to help reduce appetite and slow digestion.

However, Wegovy is significantly more effective than Saxenda, with clinical studies showing average weight loss of around 15% after 68 weeks using the standard Wegovy 2.4mg maintenance dose. Newer studies involving the Wegovy 7.2mg dose showed average weight loss of 20.7% after 72 weeks of treatment alongside diet and exercise.

In comparison, clinical studies involving liraglutide showed average weight loss of around 6.4%.

Moreover, Wegovy only needs to be administered once per week as it has a longer half-life than Saxenda, which must be administered daily.

What’s the difference between Wegovy and Orlistat?

Orlistat is an oral weight loss medication containing the active ingredient orlistat, which reduces the amount of fat absorbed by the body from food.

This mechanism differs from Wegovy, which is an injectable weight loss medication that helps regulate appetite, slows stomach emptying and prevents excessive food cravings.

Can I take Wegovy and Orlistat together?

You should not take Wegovy and Orlistat together.

Orlistat works by reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs from food, while Wegovy reduces cravings and slows gastric emptying.

Although they work through different mechanisms, taking them together can increase the risk of side effects such as digestive issues, nutrient deficiencies, irritability and dizziness.

Always consult a pharmacist or GP before taking any weight loss medication.

How is Wegovy different to Mounjaro?

Wegovy and Mounjaro are two different weight loss injections that contain different active ingredients.

Wegovy contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which mimics a hormone called GLP-1 to help regulate appetite and slow down stomach emptying.

Wegovy also improves insulin sensitivity, stabilises blood glucose levels, and prevents sudden blood sugar spikes and crashes to prevent food cravings.

In contrast, Mounjaro contains the active ingredient, tirzepatide, which mimics GLP-1 in the same way as semaglutide, but also mimics a second hormone known as GIP to further enhance insulin release by the body.

Can Wegovy be used during pregnancy?

Women should not take Wegovy (semaglutide) during pregnancy, as there is limited data on its safety and its ingredients could have an impact on developing children.

If you are planning a pregnancy, stop taking Wegovy at least two months before you plan to conceive.

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, talk to your doctor immediately, as your treatment will need to be stopped.

Can I take Wegovy while on contraceptive pills?

There is currently no evidence that Wegovy (semaglutide) can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraception (i.e. the combined pill or the progestogen-only pill).

However, diarrhoea and vomiting are common side effects of Wegovy that can affect the absorption of a pill and reduce its effectiveness. If vomiting occurs within three hours of taking the contraceptive pill, or if you experience severe diarrhoea for more than 24 hours, you should follow the missed pill rules as instructed in the patient information leaflet of your oral contraception. You should also consider an alternative non-oral method of contraception (e.g. an IUD or condoms) if your diarrhoea or vomiting persists.

How long can I stay on Wegovy?

You can use Wegovy (semaglutide) as long as needed for weight loss, so long as your doctor agrees it is safe and you are able to tolerate the side effects.

Who can use Wegovy 7.2mg?

Wegovy 7.2mg is intended for eligible adult patients with obesity (BMI of 30 or above) following clinical assessment. Patients are typically required to have already completed treatment with Wegovy 2.4mg before escalation to the 7.2mg dose is considered.

What happens if I stop taking Wegovy?

If you stop taking Wegovy, its effects on appetite regulation will wear off, causing you to feel hungrier, which may result in overeating. This can cause you to regain some of the weight you previously lost while on the medication.

What should I do if I experience the side effects of Wegovy?

Like any medication, Wegovy can cause some side effects during treatment, including dizziness, headaches, nausea or constipation. These side effects typically improve over time as the body adjusts to the treatment.

If you experience severe side effects, stop using Wegovy and speak with a doctor or GP as soon as possible. Do not take additional doses of Wegovy until you have spoken with a doctor or GP.

Can Wegovy affect the menstrual cycle?

Some women have reported that Wegovy affected their menstrual cycle and period timing. This could be due to the fact that fat tissue in the body produces oestrogen, which is a hormone that helps regulate the timing and menstrual flow of periods.

When Wegovy suppresses appetite and causes fat loss, less oestrogen is produced in the body. This imbalance could cause irregular periods, lighter flow or missed cycles in some women.

If you experience changes to your menstrual cycle after taking Wegovy, consult your doctor or GP for further advice.
